Charlotte County, Florida has one landfill in the southern part of the county located 12 miles south of the City of Punta Gorda off U.S. 41(Tamiami Trail). The County has operated the Zemel Road Facility since July 1975 and recently instituted a new program that provides for methane gas collection from the landfill. Each year the program is expected to create 3.2 megawatts of electricity; enough to power 2,000 homes. It is estimated that this project will prevent 6,375 tons of methane per year from being released into the atmosphere, the equivalent of removing 26,000 vehicles from our roads or planting 38,000 acres of forest. The electricity can be a source of revenue for the County that could generate $1 million a year, or more, over time. |
